Café des Sciences

Étudiants, Chercheurs

The French Institute in Israel is pleased to announce that the next Café des sciences will take place on November 22nd at the French Institute. For this 7th event, being part of the program “Novembre Numérique”, the French Institute invites Maya Shekel, accompanied by Daniel Landau. Both are working in the field of virtual reality.

Maya Shekel has completed a BA and MFA in the Tel Aviv University Digital Media Department at The Steve Tisch School of Film and Television. During her studies, she co-founded TAZOO, an Augmented Reality app (AR) that reconstructs the Tel Aviv Zoo, that operated between 1938-1980. The project is funded by the Tel Aviv Municipality and Tel Aviv University. TAZOO is currently still in development and fine-tuning.

In addition, she has produced and curated numerous interactive and digital media festivals including “VR City”, 33rd International Film Festival of Haifa, where she managed and curated a digital media exhibition of innovative interactive works.

Today, she is teaching a course at Tel Aviv University called "Design Thinking for Interactive Platforms”. In addition, she is working at Reichman University in the Advanced Reality Lab (ARL) on the development of a Virtual Reality (VR) project for simulative-psychological research.

Daniel Landau is an entrepreneur, researcher and media artist. For over a decade, he has been working in the field of Virtual Reality, creating art installations and performances while leading technology companies. Daniel’s work explores the complex relationship between body, identity and technology. Core to his work is the attempt to trace techno-political processes and their impact on both the society and individual levels. His primary area of research is focused on the impact of virtual embodiment on fluidity of identity and modes of empathy. His works have been presented in major venues, museums, and festivals worldwide. Daniel earned his PhD at the Aalto University Media Lab, and is currently the CEO of AVR Immersive Solutions, a Global Ed-Tech company and the Director of the INSEAD VR R&D hub.

Maya and Daniel will share with us their fascinating work on the identity and relations in the metaverse, as being virtually embodied in Avatars can impact the actual perception of who we are and how we interact with others.
